You may have read an article in the papers this week about calcium supplements and the link to heart disease and stroke. This is not applicable to Hypoparathyroidism patients as we are deficient in calcium and need to take supplements. Do not stop taking your tablets - but be aware that 1200 to 2000mg calcium is the recommended maximum dose. The news reports you may have read refer to a review just published in the BMJ which looked at a number of trials and found that calcium supplements (taken without vitamin D) are associated with a 30% risk of heart disease in the over 40's. The review excluded studies that compared calcium taken with vitamin D supplements so 'the results therefore may not apply to coadministered calcium and vitamin D supplements'. Nor are increased risks caused by higher dietary calcium intake, only supplements. Hypo patients already know that too much calcium can lead to heart problems ( not to mention kidney problems) but for Hyper patients, it is important to remember the effects of prolonged high calcium. The study is aimed particularly at those with osteoporosis for whom 'a reassessment in the the role of calcium supplements in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is warranted.'http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/341/jul29_1/c3691
