Travel Advice

If you are travelling abroad always

  • take an extra supply of your medication with you ( at least a double set ) in case of delays, loss or theft.
  • carry your medication in your hand luggage when travelling by plane, with prescription labels visible.
  • drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration
  • For UK citizens about to travel or live abroad, the Foreign Office offer practical tips on staying safe, secure and healthy, and avoiding problem situations.

Travel Insurance

  • Travel Insurance is a vital part of your trip - arranging it is your responsibility. If you don’t have it, you may have to pay thousands of pounds in medical costs if you fall ill outside the UK.
  • Always inform insurers about any pre-existing medical condition or disability you may have and any medication you will be taking with you.
  • Be aware  - always check the small print. The medical cover of your policy should include a 24 hour emergency service and should be at least £1m for Europe and £2m for the rest of the world.
  • The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge. BUT it is not an alternative to travel insurance and it does not cover all your costs in an emergency.
  • For details about travel insurance and specialist brokers for people with medical conditions, we refer you to an excellent leaflet produced by the Genetic Alliance UK : A Guide to Travel Insurance
